CLOSING THE AI CAPABILITY OVERHANG

OpenAI just named the 'capability overhang' - the gap between what AI can do and the value people actually capture from it.

We have data that shows the textures of that gap. And how it can be closed. Brightbeam surveys professionals before an AI coaching sprint - and again afterwards. The results are revealing, especially if you're trying to understand and close the overhang.

For instance, nearly half are using AI daily - even before training. So obviously they're the more capable half?

Not so much. More than three-quarters of these daily users lack the confidence to use AI for complex tasks. They're using the tools. But mostly for single prompts. Often just Google-like searches. High frequency. Low fluency. Repeating habits across time.

The same data shows almost half can't identify which tasks are even suitable for AI. Meanwhile, 81% have only ever tried two tools - most often ChatGPT at home and Copilot at work.

And all these results are remarkably similar - across businesses and from younger digital natives to the most mature of senior of leaders.

After training to close the overhang though, we see large swings:

- Complex task confidence rises to 83%

- Daily usage increases to 79%

Meanwhile, 76% no longer fear hallucinations - because output quality becomes a user-controlled variable, not a roll of the dice.

And given that 94% come to expect AI to be central to their future work, almost all of them have stopped watching the transformation and are leading it.

The honest caveat? Closing the overhang isn't especially complex. It's about effectively cultivating psychological furniture. We help build habit loops, mental models and a shared language for both operating models and cultural change.

So what's today's in-the-end-at-the-end?

OpenAI says power users consume 7x more compute than the average. But the capability overhang doesn't close with access or usage. It needs to be trained out.
